Irish Open Spaces Coding Day III – Retrospective

Last Saturday, the 11th Of September we had our  3rd IOSCD. It was great fun, the code , which is the whole purpose of the day, is all available here.

The sessions

and

It was great to have some hardware to play with, people really seem to get a good kick out of that, there was a Netduino and two Lego NXT.

Some of the sessions included: Ruby on rails app for the book club assistance (called and_on_that_basis , no idea why), netdruino hacking with some sort of Rx , and then using Rx over the wire, finally i was working on something called Code Shapes.

Once Again thanks to Jetbrains for sponsoring the event (we gave away a license for one of their products ) and Enterprise Ireland for hosting it.

Irish Open Spaces Coding Day 3

Just wanted to let everyone know about the third Irish Open Spaces Coding Day which is being held this coming Saturday 11th Sept from 11AM in the Enterprise Ireland office in East Point Business Park.

The idea is to just get together to work on something, anything, in an environment with other developers. Without the presure of providing business value, or any of the other things that we have to do for our day jobs. Basically coding for the fun of it. Which, for most of us, is the reason we got into programming in the first place. If you have some pet project you’ve been wanting to work on, come along and see if you can get some others to give you a hand and spend the day bashing out some code. Don’t worry if you don’t have a project to work on. You can always join someone else with something they’re doing.

Jetbrains have once again been very kind and given us a few licenses to give away on the day. And Microsoft are lending us a couple of Windows Phone 7 phones for people to play with. So if you’re into mobile app development it would be the perfect opportunity to see what you can do with these devices.

You can get more info at http://codingday.org and if you’re thinking of coming please register.

If you do have a project it might be a good idea to send a quick note to the list so anybody interested in helping out can get their machines set up ahead of time.

Thanks to Enterprise Ireland for hosting this event

Windows Phone 7 – 30th August – Radisson SASS Golden Lane

Windows Phone 7 is launching shortly. Martha Rotter will introduce you to the new and unique platform while walking you through building phone applications and games from scratch using Visual Studio 2010 and Blend 4. We’ll also cover the new Windows Phone Marketplace, how to deploy applications, etc.

This is a 300-level talk and there are prizes and giveaways for both ALT.NET and MTUG Dublin members. We’ll also talk about the Ireland and Northern Ireland app-building contest and lab days so that you can test and deploy your Windows Phone 7 applications. If you have an app you’re working on and you’d like to try it out on the night, please let Martha know by e-mailing her at martharo@microsoft.com and she’ll take care of it.

Note: Some people I talked to about this were interested in actually playing around with a phone, there are going to be devices present on the day (none to give away, sorry) .

August Meetup – Wednesday the 18th 7pm – Parallel Fx with Jeremie Laval

On Wednesday the 18th of August at 7pm, in Trinity Capital Hotel Jérémie Laval , who I think works on Mono, will be presenting to us a talk on Parallel FX

Please register.

Abstract:

Multicore computer are now part of our everyday life. Most desktop and laptop machines out there bundle a dual-core processor, quad-core processor or even 8-cores processor by default. This multiplication of the number of core on the same chip is destined to become the way for microprocessor manufacturers to remain competitive.

However, developers were a bit left out in this process, having written sequential programs for ages whereas they were now required to change their mindset and parallelize their program to keep them efficient across new processor revisions which isn’t an easy step to take.

That’s why we now see the creation of framework designed to help programmers to take advantage of this new kind of processor architecture by hiding away the parallelization challenge under easier primitives that they are used to. ParallelFx is one of such framework for the Mono and .NET world. By providing several new parallel constructs and concurrent data structures, it allows Mono applications to enter painlessly in this new multicore era.

This talk will cover several points :

- An introduction to what Mono is
- What the multicore revolution is all about
- How ParallelFx addresses these new challenges
- Opening to future perspective like GPGPU

Hi there

So our next meet up is in the Trinity Capital Hotel

After a lot of blog activity regarding the .Net ecosystem (OSS and from Microsoft) we need to ask ourselves Why .Net? Since this is a topic likely to be a bit controversial, links to reasonable blog posts can be posted here for reference, and the topic might be moderated by someone (maybe Mark?) Are you coming? Please register!

August is looking good too, follow the mailing list for more news.

May Meetup 19th of May – BDD

Thanks to everyone that came to the last meetup, I think deployment is a really big subject, and ti would be great to get more knowledge in the area.

I would still like to see capistrano in action in the hands of an expert, push it to the limits.  And we definitely need better tools in the .Net space ( or to learn about them if they are out there and we are not aware of them), What is everyone using?

Anyway, moving on…

Behavioour Driven Development is the topic of this meetup

- Jon Hurd  is going to talk about Cucumber
- Ruben Bartelink is going to introduce us to SubSpec
